Tuesday after my hill interval workout running I noticed a
teen aged boy walking around in his helmet talking to himself. I inquired the other cyclist who happened to be waiting at the intersection what the situation was. She informed me that the young cyclist had just been hit by a car. I got on the scene when the gentleman driver nearly in his seventies was bringing a piece of paper with his contact information to young Robin, the cyclist.
Being an avid
cylcist myself, I wanted to make sure the boy was doing
ok. Clearly he was in shock as he was babbling to himself the irrational reasons of what had just happened. Although lucky not to have injured anything of great extent physically, I could see that emotionally he needed some extra care. I managed to convince him to let me drive him home since he was really in no condition to do such.
We arrived to his house and his mother took care of him from there. I did leave my phone number as I had expressed a wish to get a follow up call if anything were wrong.
Saturday morning at ten am this call came. Young Robin's father had called to thank me for being so kind to his son, and express his profound appreciation. I was pleased to hear that nothing came of the spill other than a little road rash. I also encouraged his father to get him back on the bike and not let this get to his head. He told me they were planning on a ride today.
I'm so glad I was there, and that I could help! Not often enough do I get the opportunity to extend a hand of kindness and concern to those I do not know. It made me really feel good that I could see to his comfort and care. Just as those I have seen care for me or those I've known. It's nice to be able to contribute to the good of society. The golden rule is still alive.
